Understanding Claims
Explanation of some basic concepts can prepare you for common stresses and confusion.
Claiming damage should never be complicated or difficult.
We file claims when something has happened suddenly and accidentally, and based on the event itself. Insurance isn’t for ongoing issues, and multiple events can’t be claimed together.
When someone files a claim, they are asking the insurance company to make good on their promise to financially restore their property. We buy insurance to use it when needed.
The core challenge to working with an insurance company is that they want to dictate whether damage has occurred, what caused it, and how to fix it. They do this by sending an insurance adjuster who sees everything through the lens of his or her training and company incentives.
Unfortunately, there are no industry standards regarding the level of training that insurance adjusters receive, or any agreement as far as how to identify damage or determine proper repairs.
Not surprisingly, insurance representatives will often not look very hard and blame other causations or events they know cannot be covered. You have an obligation to make sure they see everything and treat your fairly.
Unless you handle interactions like this daily, your interests will be vastly better supported by hiring either a knowledgeable contractor to present the facts of the loss to your insurance company, or otherwise hire a Public Insurance Adjuster to act within the claim on your behalf.
Claims = Negotiations
Your insurance company will argue against covering everything – especially the necessary details.
Be patient, it’s normal.
Denials and "We Can't"
They will make dismissive statements, such as something is “not covered”, “can’t do it”.
This is just a technique.
Who to believe
If you don’t know an answer or think their question is odd – forward it to us. We can qualify their assertions.
We have done this 15,000+ times.
Big and slow
Insurance companies are not fast, and have been known to use delays as retribution for fighting back.
Expect to wait on them.
